Week 42 - Country Cottage Slaw
For week 42, I made Country Cottage Slaw from the 2002 cookbook "Retro Barbecue: Tasty Recipes for the Grillin' Guy" by Linda Everett. As with all the cookbooks from the "retro" series, this one is full of fun recipes and graphics.
Slaw isn't particularly hard to make or something that is new to me, but I had recently gone apple picking and for some reason had purchased a cabbage that I needed to use up. So, I decided this recipe was the perfect one to try.
In addition to the apples and cabbage, this recipe called for green peppers and onion, which I chopped up and put in a bowl. The dressing was made from apple cider vinegar, mayonnaise, sour cream and salt and pepper. Everything was mixed together and some toasted sesame seeds added at the end.
I served the slaw that night with pork tenderloin and it made a great side dish. The apples added a nice sweetness and even though I don't typically like green peppers, they did add a nice crunch and balance to the flavor. The toasted sesame seeds were a nice touch as they added a bit of nuttiness and texture.
